The following list was compiled and broadcast on TV 19 June 1998
by the American Film Institute and advertised as The 100 years
greatest 100 movies.

The original list of 40,000 movies was given to
6,500 members on the 30th anniversary of AFI in 1996.
The resulting selections have an inherent bias, given that
the list was nominated by AFI members and covered only those
movies that were produced up to and including 1995.

The list was then given to filmakers, executives, exhibitors,
journalists, historians & notable americans for ranking purposes.

The following criteria were used in the ranking:

1.) The films popularity over time.
2.) The films critical & award recognition.
3.) The films creative & technical acheivement.
4.) The films historical significance & cultural impact.

The list of AFI Top 100 films is shown after the plots.

(1) The first plot shows that the majority of the films that were
ranked, were made from 1940 to 1980. It also shows that 25% of the films
that were selected were made between 1948 and 1960 which accounts
for only 12% of the time period.

(2) The second plot shows that only 9 of the 100 (9%) ranked films used
black and white photography for effect and not necessity.

(3) The third plot shows the number of films ranked as a function of time.
The approximate 'bell curve' would tend to support the conclusion that
temporal bias did not have a major role in the study.

(4) The fouth plot shows the number of ranked films that were made
prior to 1950 and after 1950. As expected, a majority
(almost twice as many films) were made during the period 1951 - 1996

(5) The fifth plot shows the percentage of films that were produced
in color versus black and white.

(6) The sixth plot shows the reason that the film was selected and
and the percentage of time that this particular reason was used as criterea.
Multiple reasons applied to the choices; specifically, a film could be chosen
for reason 1 (it's popularity over time) while another film could have been
chosen for reasons's 1,3 and 4.
